You do need to be 18 years or older to register to be marrow donor. The registration process is just collecting your cells from your cheek swab to see if you are a match. If you are a match with someone, then you will go through the marrow donation process. There are two ways that marrow can be extracted. The traditional is an outpatient surgery where they take the marrow from your hip bone. Another is through PBSC donation which is a non-surgical procedure that takes your blood and cycles it through a machine and back into you in order to extract your good blood forming cells. PBSC donation is done %73 of the time. I know that it might sound scary to go through the process of donating marrow, but the recovery is quick and the benefit of saving a life is priceless and worth it for most! Please think about signing up to be a donor when you turn 18. It's not guaranteed that you will be someone's match but if you are, you could be the only hope for someone out there!
